This training course is designed for officers who are new to mapping and QGIS, or those who are familiar with GIS but would like to revisit the fundamentals. This session is limited to 15 attendees. This session will cover:
Geospatial Data Fundamentals (9:30-11:30)
- Spatial vs non-spatial data
- Vector and raster data
- Coordinate systems and projections
- Introduction to QGIS
Getting started with QGIS (11:30 onwards)
- Adding data in QGIS
- Editing data in QGIS
- Working with data in QGIS
- Attribute Table
- Styling and Symbology
Prerequisites:
- No prior knowledge required.
- Users must have QGIS installed on their work device.
- There will be frequent breaks in the session for users to run through exercises to cement the learnings - these are interactive and will be supported by training assistants.
Notes:
Please note there will be an hour break for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. There will also be 5-10 minute breaks after every hour. If you can no longer make the session after registering, please ensure you cancel so others can attend. Attendees must be available to attend the full session.
This training course is designed for officers who know about projections and basic functionality in QGIS but wish to know more about the types of spatial analysis and making professional maps in QGIS. This session is limited to 15 attendees. This session will cover:
QGIS Advanced Analysis (9:30-12:30)
- Vector data analysis
- Raster data analysis
- Joining data
- Measuring distances and areas
QGIS Professional Cartography (13:30-16:30)
- Map layout principles
- Canvas layouts
- Scale bars, north arrows, legends
- Template reporting
- Map callouts
Prerequisites:
- Users must have QGIS installed on their work device. Attendees will be able to run through exercises in breakout rooms to help embed learnings - these are interactive and will be fully supported by training assistants.
- Participants should be familiar with core Geospatial Principles and basic QGIS functions. Basic QGIS functions, including being able to load in layers, query the attribute table, and style layers, are covered in the Geospatial Basics training course and are assumed knowledge. If you are new to QGIS, please attend the Geospatial Basics course prior to this session.
Notes: Please note there will be an hour break for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. There will also be 5-10 minute breaks after every hour. If you can no longer make the session after registering, please ensure you cancel so others can attend. Attendees must be available to attend the full session.
This training course will cover the data standards, generic cleaning methods, and the pathway to publishing data on the Planning Data Platform. The session is designed for officers who are unfamiliar with the required data fields, unsure if their data meets the required standard, or are unsure on the process of publishing their data to the platform. In the afternoon, there is an opportunity to talk through data cleaning issues you may be facing and get targeted help from one of the training assistants. The session will focus on data standards and common data issues associated with:
- Tree Protection Orders (TPOs)
- Listed Buildings
- Conservation Areas
- Article 4 Directions
Data Standards and Publishing (9:30-12:30)
- Data standards and publication requirements
- Presumption to publish and data licencing
- Common data quality issues and how to avoid them
- Identifying and overcoming barriers to clean data
Targeted Help (13:30-16:30)
- Discuss common issues faced by the attendees
- Split into breakout groups offering targeted support
- Training assistants can provide 1:1 help to walk through data cleaning in QGIS
Prerequisites:
- Guidance is given on spatial data cleansing using QGIS. Please attend the Geospatial Basics QGIS Training and the Intermediate QGIS Training sessions if you wish to understand more about using QGIS.
- Please bring a dataset you would like support with for the afternoon session. The afternoon includes hands-on assistance to help you identify issues, clean your data, and prepare it for publication.
Notes: Please note there will be an hour break for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. There will also be 5-10 minute breaks after every hour. This session is limited to 15 attendees. If you can no longer make the session after registering, please ensure you cancel so others can attend. Attendees may wish to just attend the morning for the data standards and publishing section, the afternoon may not be applicable to all attendees.
