Improving communication between communities and a local planning authority

Milton Keynes Council

In 2016 a toolkit was developed by Milton Keynes Council for local planning authorities who wish to update their Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) with the help of the community.

The toolkit explains the process that Milton Keynes Council went through to achieve this which included study visits with local communities. The project improved the collaboration between the local planning authority and neighbourhood groups and provided them with new skills and knowledge of the specific planning area; the process highlighted key issues within local areas which otherwise would not have come to light.

The toolkit contains template documents relating to the SHLAA surveying process as well as key lessons learnt from the application of the engagement methods which may still be relevant and useful for the SHLAA process that are undertaken by Councils.
