Central government published the National Model Design Code in July 2021, to support local councils and communities to set standards around design in their local area and aid them in their creation of more beautiful and sustainable places and buildings. To support its use the government tested the application of the National Model Design Code with 15 local authority pilot projects in a Phase 1 Pilot Programme. University College London, working with PAS, conducted the monitoring and evaluation of this National Model Design Code Pilot Programme, drawing out lessons which can help local councils and communities across England to set standards around design, placing a greater emphasis on beauty, place-making and good design.
