A key objective of the LGA's Rewiring Public Services Campaign is to transform public services to prevent problems rather than just picking up the pieces. Despite dealing with a 33 per cent cut in funding from central government and facing a funding gap of £15.6 billion in 2019/2020, councils across the country are leading the public sector in revolutionising their services.

The LGA's Future Ways of Working offer seeks to support councils exploring radical and innovative new ideas that grab the headlines as well as delivering practical support and guidance that promotes and seeks to replicate successful initiatives that have already delivered savings.

Support to councils:

Income Generation

Bringing together information and support for the increasingly important area of income generation for councils.

Shared services

Identifying best practice and national efficiency savings achieved through existing shared service arrangements and providing support to those councils considering moving to a shared services model. This section also contains the LGA Shared Services Map.

Productivity experts

The Expert programme provides funding to councils to enable them to engage an expert in their field to provide the necessary skills and expertise to help deliver their efficiency savings. These experts could be officers or elected members from other councils or private sector consultants.

Future Councils Programme

Providing councils with seed funding and/or facilitated support to assist them in implementing innovative approaches that will generate productivity gains. We will work with councils to ensure that key successes can be replicated across the sector.
