When Victoria Grant first considered applying for the Local Government Apprentice of the Year event 2026, she had the same doubts many apprentices experience. Would she know enough? Did she have enough experience? Would she be able to contribute? Yet her experience quickly taught her an important lesson: the event is not about being an expert; it is about bringing your own skills, experiences and perspectives and applying them as part of a team.
When Victoria Grant first considered applying for the Local Government Apprentice of the Year event 2026, she had the same doubts many apprentices experience. Would she know enough? Did she have enough experience? Would she be able to contribute? Yet her experience quickly taught her an important lesson: the event is not about being an expert; it is about bringing your own skills, experiences and perspectives and applying them as part of a team.
At the time of the event, Victoria was completing the Level 3 HR apprenticeship while working at Plymouth City Council. When her manager suggested applying, her initial reaction was nerves and uncertainty. However, after researching previous events and speaking with colleagues, she decided to focus on the opportunity rather than her selfdoubt. Arriving on day one feeling slightly anxious and worried, Victoria quickly discovered that many of the other apprentices felt the same. As the day progressed and confidence grew within the team, so did her belief in herself. This newfound confidence was put to the test when her teammates nominated her to present their final proposal. Earlier in the day, she would never have imagined representing her team, but their trust and encouragement helped her overcome those fears. Reflecting afterwards, she described it as a significant personal achievement:
It’s given me the confidence and the skill to attempt and try to do anything, regardless of what my brain is telling me
The experience fundamentally changed the way she approaches new opportunities. Rather than focusing on what she does not know, she now focuses on her ability to learn, adapt and grow. The guest speakers on day two also left a lasting impression. Victoria was
particularly inspired by Sam Holdcroft’s apprenticeship journey and his commitment to continuous professional development. Hearing how he had embraced opportunities to develop throughout his career reinforced her own decision to continue her learning journey through the level 6 apprenticeship she is now undertaking.
The inspiration from the guest speakers was followed by a moment Victoria never expected. While listening to the award announcements, she was focused on celebrating the achievements of others and was not expecting to hear her own name called out as one of the event's runners-up. As the reality began to sink in, the shock quickly turned into pride. Being recognised felt a huge honour and validated the effort she had put into stepping outside her comfort zone. It was a particularly special moment given how nervous she had felt at the start of the event and how much her confidence had grown. Victoria was impressed by how well the event was organised. She found the experience seamless, supportive and reassuring. From the pre-event briefing to the facilitated activities, there was always clear guidance available, allowing participants to focus on learning, contributing and enjoying the experience.The experience fundamentally changed the way she approaches new opportunities. It is one of the most rewarding development opportunities she has experienced, helping her build confidence, trust in her own abilities and a willingness to embrace new challenges
