Who we are and what we do

We are the national voice of local government, working with councils to support, promote and improve local government.

Who are our members?

We are a membership organisation. In total, 415 authorities are members of the LGA for 2017/18. These include 349 English Councils, the 22 Welsh councils via the Welsh LGA, 30 fire authorities, 7 national parks, 5 Parish/Town Councils via corporate membership with NALC, one town council and Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee. *With the exception of Gosport Borough Council and the London Boroughs of Barnet, Bromley and Wandsworth.

What is the LGA?

We are a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.
