Joint circular 139 – Public duties

Dear Colleague

The following change has been agreed to the terms and conditions in the PSC Handbook which will apply from 8 October 2024.

Section 3, Leave, Paragraph 10, Public Services Leave – This provision is currently as follows:

10. Public service leave

Employers should consider granting leave in appropriate cases, with or without pay, to enable employees to undertake public duties.

The PSC has agreed that this should be amended and will now be as follows:

The Police Staff Council recognises the important and valuable contribution that police staff can make to their communities through serving on public bodies or undertaking public duties. Employers will grant a reasonable amount of time off, with or without pay, to enable employees to undertake certain public duties as listed at https://www.gov.uk/time-off-work-public-duties

This will be included in a revised PSC Handbook which can be accessed at: https://www.local.gov.uk/our-support/workforce-and-hr-support/police/police-staff. If you require any clarification or information on these changes to the PSC Handbook, please refer to the contact details above.

Yours sincerely

Ben Priestley, Trade Union Side Secretary
David Algie, Employers’ Side Secretariat
