Sharing practical approaches

The Care Act 2014 requires councils to ‘consider a person’s own strengths and capabilities, and what support might be available from their wider support network or within the community to help’ in considering ‘what else other than the provision of care and support might assist the person in meeting the outcomes they want to achieve’. Strengths-based practice is therefore a collaborative approach between the person supported by services and those supporting them, allowing them to work together to determine an outcome that draws on the person’s strengths and assets.

Yorkshire and Humber - January 2018

This event in focused on sharing good practice and ideas on using a strengths based approach. The key themes from the day were:

  • a strengths based approach is not just for social workers
  • the value of taking a good close look at how you are working in practice can reveal areas to prioritise
  • from its work with councils, the National Development Team for Inclusion is seeing the themes of ‘embedding a culture’ and ‘growing leaders’ as crucial
  • areas are developing tools to support a strength based approach and to have good conversations where people’s support is measured and planned
  • the region has developed a Charter outlining their commitment and the principals of their approach
  • the practice of implementing a ‘front door’ that is strength based and connects well with other organisations and support.
