As part of the Government’s 'Fit for the future: 10-year Health Plan for England', local government has a central role to play in health prevention, and public health is key to its delivery.
This year, the Local Government Association (LGA) is launching a refreshed programme of support, including public health peer reviews, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care. The programme is funded from 2026-2029 and is known as the Public Health Improvement Programme.
The programme involves a range of support:
Public Health Peer Reviews
Universal support, available to all councils
Targeted support to councils
Responsive call-off support, based on sector or specific council need
The programme is designed to support councils to deliver on their statutory duties and public health outcome priorities. We are in continuous consultation with councils to ensure that support is relevant and responds to improvement needs.
Thirty councils have already signed up to undertake a public health peer review with a total of 90 public health peer reviews to be delivered up to 31 March 2029.
The three pages in this section provide respectively: information about the LGA's Public Health Improvement Programme and the range of support available to councils; more information about Public Health Peer Reviews specifically; and details about becoming a peer.
