Biodiversity and Our Environment

This module will provide an introduction to the subject, as well as providing tips and guidance on how councils can take action to protect their natural habitats.

Waste accounted for five per cent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, with significant reductions in emissions from waste being due to changing waste disposal practices.

The land use, land-use change and forestry (referred to as ‘land use’ for brevity), and agriculture sectors are a major contributor to UK greenhouse gas emissions.

This webinar covered how councils and farmers can work together, how councils can put together a Local Nature Recovery Plan, how the use of greenspace data can help inform a biodiversity action plan and lastly, and how councils can undertake biodiversity net gain.

This webinar was organised as part of the LGA’s green webinar series. It examined the case for planting trees in terms of finance and carbon, the challenges this presents for local authorities and the benefits of urban tree planting.
