CIRCULAR EMP/4/24

National Employers update:

1.    The National Employers met in October, as did the NJC. This employers’ circular provides a brief update of some of the key issues discussed, as well as confirming the appointments to their national Advisory Forum.

Advisory Forum membership

2.    Please find attached for information a list of the fourteen advisers appointed to the National Employers’ Advisory Forum for the forthcoming year effective 1 November 2024 (unless otherwise stated). The Advisory Forum provides advice to national employer members of both the NJC and the MMNB on all substantive matters before them.

3.    The National Employers seek to balance geography and governance when deciding who to appoint and are grateful to all colleagues who expressed an interest in joining the forum this year.

4.    The National Employers also give particular thanks to those standing down - some of whom have provided vital advice and guidance to the NJC over many years.

NJC/National Employer updates

5.    Items on the October NJC agenda  included:

  • An update on the work of the Inclusive Fire Service Group.

  • A report on the work the Joint Secretaries are doing to provide a technical update to the Grey Book which we aim to publish early in the New Year.

  • The recruitment process for a new Independent Chair of the NJC, due to the end of Professor Lynette Harris’s second term of office. The NJC paid tribute to Lynette for work and support over the last six years.

  • The NJC also heard concerns from the Employees' side about requirements to hold a driving licence on recruitment to the Fire Service, which the employers felt was a matter for local services.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah Ward
