Peers wanted

The LGA is expanding its pool of peers – people working in or with experience of health and care systems – as part of a new programme of peer reviews taking place through to April.

The LGA, NHS Providers and NHS Confederation, working as a partnership, are expanding our pool of peers – people working in or with experience of health and care systems – to support a new programme of peer reviews taking place through to April. A peer review is a constructive and supportive process delivered by critical friends in the spirit of mutual support and continuous improvement. Peers don’t judge the systems they visit, they hold up a mirror to help those leaders and colleagues reflect on what is working well and where there are opportunities to improve. Our peers find they get as much out of the experience as the colleagues in the system they visit, the mutual exchange of issues and ideas, the chance to take back lessons learnt to their respective roles, and the opportunity to build networks.

We want to expand the knowledge, experience and perspectives our peers can bring to our reviews – from senior officers, political leaders and programme managers to those leading a community organisation, primary care or social care, to name just a few. We also want to ensure our teams of peers reflect the diversity of the communities served by the system or place partnership, as well as bring into our reviews the expertise and insights of people with experience borne of living with health or care needs, or of caring for someone who does.

The programme we are setting up will focus on supporting ICSs and the places within them to establish place-based partnerships and develop their population health management approaches. This will complement our existing peer reviews and bespoke support for partnerships including integrated care systems, health and wellbeing boards and primary care networks using our well-established and well-respected Sector-Led Improvement methodology.

We are seeking expressions of interest from people who can bring to our reviews their experience and understanding of the issues facing systems and places. You do not need to have experience of being in a peer review as we will provide training and you will be part of team that includes experienced peer reviewers, supported by an expert team. The time commitment would be 1-2 days per peer review, and these are likely to take place between September 2021 to April 2022. Since the start of the pandemic, our peer reviews have been delivered remotely via Teams, and it is likely this will continue for the foreseeable future.

If you would like to express an interest, ask questions or want an informal chat, please email [email protected], indicating any questions and/or interest, plus your job role, very brief outline of experience and an initial idea of what time commitment you could offer (there is no minimum). We look forward to hearing from you!
