Poem by Casey Bailey

So here we are,

On the back of manic general election,

Where a lot of people voted for a national direction,

Red, yellow, blue or green what a crazy game of twister,

But remember governance isn't strictly for Westminster,

Of course it's important to consider those who oversee,

But it's hard to match the impact of those who do it locally,

For you it might be Liverpool, Lancashire or Leeds,

For me it's Birmingham, where I have grown from just a seed

It is the local government who will keep our kids safe,

And the local government that will tidy up the place,

Local government are who will be there to lend a shoulder,

And ensure that I get quality of care when I get older.

Local, in our cities and our towns,

Vocal, they will be the ones who do you proud.

Tested, and unrivalled for efficiency,

Invested, they have the power and they ability.

If you think I'd love your city more than Brum,

I'm sorry but I'm doubtful,

But if your grass is really greener,

That's a credit to your council,

They do that and still manage

To drive the local economy,

And ensure we learn properly,

Through education authorities.

The people who listen when we speak,

Who look us in our faces,

Those who know just what we see,

On a day to day I basis,

Providing more than just policy,

We trust because their honesty,

With people of the people,

It's councils that lead places.
