This guide contains ideas, tools and approaches to help local authority officers to manage performance effectively, in collaboration with councillors. We aim for this guidance to be helpful to officers who are undertaking, or looking to develop, performance management within their local authority.
Many local authorities are using the period of recovery and renewal after the COVID-19 pandemic to rethink their strategies, partnership approaches and engagement with citizens. As they do this, it is important to ensure that officers are equipped with the performance management skills they need to answer the question: 'Are the actions of your council effective in making the progress that is important to citizens?'.
