The European Commission Directorate-General for Transport provides funds on the basis of an annual work programme for projects on transport, covering issues including urban transport learning and road safety.

Programme summary

This programme funds projects which shift freight transport from the road to sea, rail and inland waterways, including ‘motorways of the sea' and ‘traffic avoidance' projects. It funds only services, rather than infrastructure, as such is primarily directed towards the private sector. Projects must cover at least two European countries. Calls are issued on an annual basis. €67.5 million is allocated to the 2011 call.

Programme summary

Supports infrastructure projects that contribute to the completion of the Trans-European Transport Network. It can fund studies, works or support access to capital finance. Budget: €8 billion for 2007-2013. The programme has two components:

  • Multi-Annual Indicative Programme – to finance complex, long-term projects
  • Non-Multi-Annual Indicative Programme – to fund smaller projects.

TEN-T funding is managed on behalf of the European Commission by the TEN-T Executive Agency (TEN-T EA).

Programme summary

FP7 funds a range of research and innovation opportunities in the transport sector, and can be a useful source of funding for exploring innovative and technological solutions to transport issues. Most projects are transnational, and so must involve partners from more than one country.

CIVITAS

Supports cities to design, implement and test innovative strategies for sustainable urban transport. This includes: Development, demonstration and validation of new policy approaches and innovative transport technologies; Networking of cities.

Programme summary

The ‘STEER' component of the Intelligent Energy Europe supporting projects on energy use in transport. In general projects require at least 3 partner organisations from 3 different eligible countries, with a budget usually €0.5 to €2.5 million.

The 2011 call supported projects on the take-up of sustainable urban mobility plans; increasing energy efficiency in urban freight distribution; promoting the greening of leisure travel; on green and energy efficient vehicles, including GPP, and eco-driving. Road Safety

This programme is of interest to:

Transport managers.

Programme summary

Transport managers. The European Commission is planning to grant subsidies totalling the indicative amount of €1,000,000 to promote road safety as announced in the 2011 work programme adopted by the European Commission.
