The LGA has a range of practical support available, on a free of charge and/or subsidised basis, to enable local authorities to exploit the opportunities that this approach to improvement provides.
This includes support of a corporate nature such as leadership programmes, peer challenge, LG Inform (our benchmarking service) and programmes tailored to specific service areas such as children's, adults', health, care, financial, culture, tourism, sport and planning services.
An overview of our current offer can be found in the brochure Sector-led improvement: our offer of support.
This paper reports, at the half year stage, on the progress of the sector’s improvement programme for 2019/20. The report identifies some key highlights at the half year stage; some headline results from our on-going evaluation and analysis of councils’ feedback; and invites views about potential support needs in 2020/21.
Sector led improvement (SLI) support is funded through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The success of sector-led improvement
Hear directly from chief executives and leaders how the LGA’s sector-led improvement support has aided their improvement journeys, the impact and value of the SLI approach and what difference it has made to them.
How to access our sector-led improvement offer
Local authorities can access support through our regionally based Principal Advisers (PAs).
PAs are the LGA's focal point for discussions with local authorities about their improvement needs and the support we can make available, working with existing sector-owned improvement bodies at sub-national level and with colleagues supporting children's services improvement and adults/health.
