Responding to a study by University College London on the availability of menthol cigarettes despite a ban on the products, Cllr Heather Kidd, trading standards spokesperson for the Local Government Association said:

“Council trading standards teams work hard to tackle the sale of menthol flavoured cigarettes. There is extensive evidence to suggest these are highly addictive and damaging to people’s health.

“However, many councils are struggling to fully staff their enforcement services and it’s important local trading standards get the funding they need to properly enforce this ban. This needs to include funding for the proposed ban on disposable vapes as well.”
