LGA launches transformation and innovation exchange

“By sharing resources and information, councils can reflect on their own performance at the same time as learning from other local authority experiences. This process will enable councils to prepare for continued challenges that they will face.”

The LGA is today launching the beta version of the new Transformation and Innovation Exchange;

As a new resource in the LGA’s sector-led improvement programme, the Transformation and Innovation Exchange brings into one place a range of case studies, guidance and other resources about transformation, innovation and efficiency; and a self-assessment tool which has been developed with councils, for councils, to help identify areas for further improvement.

The beta self-assessment tool will help authorities identify further improvement opportunities and useful support, such as peer challenges, toolkits, training and other resources. It will encourage internal discussion and give councils the ability to share their experiences with colleagues and between organisations.

With a focus on an understanding of place, financial planning and viability, leadership of organisation and place and capacity to deliver, the self-assessment tool helps councils explore their ambition for change.

The LGA encourages widespread take-up and use of the self-assessment tool, as well as encouraging feedback from users.

Cllr Peter Fleming, Chairman of the LGA’s Improvement and Innovation Board, who will reveal the Exchange at the LGA’s Annual Conference in Birmingham today, said:

“The improvement tool, developed by councils, for councils, is an opportunity for them to continue on their improvement journey.

“By sharing resources and information, councils can reflect on their own performance at the same time as learning from other local authority experiences. This process will enable councils to prepare for continued challenges that they will face.”

Rishi Sunak MP, Local Government Minister, said:

“Information is power and enabling councils to better share their expertise and assess their work has the potential to bring huge benefits to the whole sector.

“This is why we’re delighted the LGA has worked with councils to develop the Transformation and Innovation Exchange tool, to help all authorities to look at what they’re doing well and what could be further improved.

“By encouraging more collaborative working, the Exchange will help councils to deliver high quality services for local people.”

  • Councils in England face an overall funding gap of £8 billion by 2025. The LGA’s #CouncilsCan campaign aims to influence the forthcoming Spending Review and highlight the growing risk to vital local services if the Government does not take action to secure the financial sustainability of councils.
