The LGA wants to work with Government on developing and funding a better system for accommodating and supporting asylum seekers.

After a period of ill health and having been away from the organisation since January, Joanna Killian has decided that she will not be returning to the LGA and will be stepping down from her role as Chief Executive.

“Devolution is proving its value by giving local areas the powers they need to drive growth and improve outcomes for communities, however we need to make sure that no parts of the country are left behind in the process."

“Ensuring children get the best care and support is a priority for councils. While no council wants to place a child in an unregistered setting, in many cases they have no choice due to the lack of available provision that meets children’s needs.

Councils in England are facing a £7 billion funding black hole within three years opening up a gap so large it is more than the current council spend on roads, transport, homelessness and housing services combined. 

"Success will require a new partnership between national government, local government and citizens. It will ultimately be judged by whether people are better able to remain connected to the people, places and passions that matter most in their lives.

The LGA has published a new handbook to help councils and partners work together more effectively to make better use of public resources.

“A government, led by a new Prime Minister, presents an opportunity to revisit some of the practicalities of the current Local Government Reorganisation programme."
