LG Challenge 2015: Catch up with the action so far


Catch up with the previous instalments of this year's Local Government Challenge.

Competitors take part in a series of real-life challenges in host authorities around the country, which test their individual and team working skills. The winner can look forward to a career-enhancing scholarship worth up to £10,000 from the Bruce Lockhart Leadership Programme, to be used to promote localism and local government through the exchange of ideas between the UK, the USA and Europe – and to put into practice successful ideas.

Challenge 1: Bath and North East Somerset Council 

How can Bath & North East Somerset Council attract new investment in the Bath City Riverside Enterprise Area by commercial developers and businesses to enable us to achieve our aim of being ‘more open for business’ and promote successful delivery of the adopted vision?” 

Challenge 2: Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council 

Contestants will consider the council’s Digital Strategy and identify how to develop and implement a charter with employers across Doncaster, with the aim of enabling every person in Doncaster who wishes to get connected has access to the internet and basic ICT Skills & Training. 

Challenge 3: Mole Valley District Council 

Through engaging with key stakeholders, identify the barriers to recycling in hard to reach areas, and propose solutions to overcome these barriers. 

Challenge 4: South Cambridgeshire District Council 

Ideas for a campaign to encourage employers to invest in housing for their employees, taking into account the proposed investment principles. This will be considered by the panel during the teams’ presentations.   

Challenge 5: Hereford and Worcester Fire Service 

The aim of the challenge was to address current issues affecting recruitment and retention of on-call firefighters by developing and presenting an innovative new publicity campaign, designed to encourage local people to sign up to become an on-call firefighter. The campaign had to include a new strapline and appeal to a wide cross-section of people, including local employers. 

The Final 

After careful consideration and as a result of a vote made by conference attendees we're pleased to announce that Jude Taylor of Staffordshire County Council took the prestigious prize. Congratulations Jude.
