This page lists all of the frequently asked questions we have received on the Behavioural Insights Programme.
You can view a full description of what behavioural insights is alongside LGA examples on our website.
We are keen to receive applications from groups of councils or those involving partner organisations. Please note – applications are limited to one per council, including where a council is a partner in a joint bid.
We are unable to match fund applications where the proposed project is too similar to a project already funded in previous phases of the programme. This is because the LGA is building an evidence base of behavioural insights in local government and requires a diverse portfolio of projects to support this. Please visit our website to see the full list of previous projects.
We encourage applications which seek to address tricky social problems which local government has been grappling with recently.
We would like to hear about the behavioural challenge or issue which you have. At this point, there is not a solution to the challenge – this is what the project will examine. In the application form therefore, we will not require you to set out the solution to the problem.
Councils may like to focus on the following behaviours but by no means are limited to them:
- Financial management
- Economic growth
- Continuing reduced travel, particularly for work
- Increasing physical activity
- Reducing snacking behaviours
- Reducing gambling
- Reducing alcohol intake
The competition is tough to be successful in accessing the grant funding. The LGA were extremely oversubscribed last year. We encourage all applications to be well thought through and of a high standard.
We have run five cohorts of funding previously to this round which is the sixth cohort.
Eight organisations will be awarded the funding in this cohort.
The applicant should be ready and willing to contribute to the project financially and not in kind e.g in the form of staff time. The council will need to be ready to put in £20,000-£30,000 towards the project. The LGA contribution will be £20,000.
The council and the LGA will have a project kick off call on December 4 2020 so please do keep this day free in the diary.
Yes, there is a requirement for the Project Manager to make themselves available on January 20 2021. This will be an introductory session to the LGA programme, behavioural insights and an opportunity to meet the LGA officers and other organisations on the cohort.
- Any council (including all those not in membership of the Local Government Association)
- National Parks
- Fire and Rescue Services
Unfortunately, the grant funding is for English councils only. We would encourage all councils to check out the LGA Behavioural Insights webpages for further behavioural change techniques, case studies and tools.
- The Communications Officer/team
- The Data Protection Officer
- The organisation’s Chief Executive/Most Senior Officer
Yes, a confirmation in the application form from your most senior officer in the organisation will be required to pursue the application.
Sufficient detail is required to make a good application but we ask that applications are kept clear and succinct. This means that applications should not exceed 200 words per question but can be less than that.
Deadline for applications: Thursday 29 October 2020 at 5pm
