A new report into the Building Control profession calls for more new recruits
The Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety by Dame Judith Hackitt has triggered the biggest changes to the building control profession in a generation. As employers struggle to recruit qualified staff, fewer young people are choosing a career in building control.
To better understand the issues and help promote the profession, we have worked alongside a range of key partners to produced a report based on a survey of all staff working in and for the building control profession. This survey – conducted by Kinetiq on behalf of the LGA, Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and Construction Industry Council Approved Inspectors Register Ltd (CICAIR) – had over 1,100 responses from employees across the UK, spanning dozens of employers in both the public and private sectors.
The report examines a number of critical questions about the state of the building control workforce in the UK:
- What is the overall composition of the workforce?
- How do employees perceive their working environment?
- What factors influence them to remain engaged with their work and 'minded' to stay with their organisations?
These questions will help to inform a national debate about the health of the profession, as it adapts to the imminent introduction of the Building Safety Act, designed to ensure consistency across the building control profession and drive-up standards.
