The Care Quality Commission (CQC), through its reviews over the past year, has identified that progress on integration is not being made in care and health systems due to organisational and relationship issues between the NHS and local authorities.

We have developed a mirroring offer for local NHS and political leaders to further mutual understanding and effective engagement as place based leaders in care, health and wellbeing.

The offer for NHS leaders

As an NHS leader you may have only a vague understanding of how local authorities work. After all, how many people outside of the NHS family really understand what makes the NHS tick?

A half-day practical and interactive workshop will explore what local councillors do, what motivates them, drivers and demands, the roles and responsibilities of members and officers, the culture of accountability, and what happens when local government and the NHS work together.

This workshop is for local NHS leaders, clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), providers, sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs), integrated care systems (ICSs) and other local partnerships.

Our facilitators are experienced local politicians and will tailor the session to reflect the place based context and needs of the audience.

By the end of the session participants will:

• be aware of the structure of local government and its wider public services context
• have the opportunity to gauge a politician’s perspective of the environment in which they operate and how this influences policy and decision making 
• consider the implications of these for fostering effective working relationships with local government leaders
• explore how to seek to influence this in the future.
