Your first ten days as a lead member for children's services

This guide is intended to help provide some structure to your first few days in office, and to cut through some of the initial ‘noise’, so that you can focus on what’s important straight away, and what you need to be thinking about going forward.

As the lead member for children’s services you hold political accountability for all council children’s services, including education and social care. The director of children’s services carries the professional accountability.

It’s your responsibility to set the council’s vision for children and young people’s services, to take a strategic view in setting local priorities and budgets, provide challenge and support to the director of children’s services and other members of the senior management team as necessary. You will also facilitate and lead strategic partnerships.

You also have a responsibility to champion the voice of children and young people in all decision-making, including across all council services and in partnerships.
