Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, Chair of the Local Government Association, which represents councils, said:
“Local government is where national ambitions become real for residents. That is why local and strategic authorities are not only central to tackling the concerns of their communities but are democratic leaders in their own right - shaping priorities, driving change and championing the needs of local people. They are essential to rebuilding public services around prevention, driving inclusive and sustainable growth and strengthening the social fabric of communities.
“Successive devolution agreements have shown that when local leaders are trusted with real powers, communities thrive. Councils will work with the Prime Minister's government to tackle the biggest issues facing our communities, including long overdue reform of adult social care and ending rough sleeping. It is important they are recognised as equal partners to shape national policy. A rebalancing of power must include completing the devolution map so that every community can benefit from meaningful devolution, avoiding a long tail of areas left without devolved powers, resources or influence.
