Today, Keep Britain Working published their review into state of the UK's workforce. Reacting to the review, the LGA highlighted the importance of public health in a health workforce, and the crucial role of councils in delivering it.

At the 10-year milestone of children’s public health responsibilities moving to local authorities, the Local Government Association (LGA) is urging the Government to commit to public health in the Autumn Budget to meet the ambition of raising the ‘healthiest generation of children’, with strong leadership and sustained investment.

“The Tobacco and Vapes Bill progressing through Parliament, presents a unique opportunity to protect future generations from the harms of smoking.

"This roll out is a significant move that will improve access to emergency contraception, by providing quick, confidential, and free options for women.

"Including menopause in the NHS Health Check is a positive step towards normalising conversations, improving early intervention, and reducing the stigma that still surrounds this natural life stage.

"The disproportionate impact of pharmacy closures on more deprived areas risks widening already stark health inequalities.

"We support the NHS decision to offer cabotegravir as a long-acting injectable option for HIV prevention through local council commissioned sexual health clinics

"A well-designed licensing system would give councils the tools they need to better regulate sales, protect young people, and support enforcement, without placing unnecessary burdens on responsible retailers.

"We know that right from a young age, good oral health can impact the speech, sleep, eating and overall health of a child. Councils up and down the country have been working hard with local early years providers and schools to improve the oral health of children."

“Councils have led the way in reducing teenage pregnancies. We must now build on the achievements of the past 25 years by tackling persistent inequalities, digital exclusion, school absence and pandemic legacies."
