The LGA has developed a series of resources and programmes aimed at supporting councils learn from best practice, which can positively impact their own processes.
Chief Executive Foundation Development Programme
The Local Government Chief Executives’ Development Framework is being used to underpin a new Leadership Programme for new Local Government Chief Executives. Newly appointed Chief Executives should join the Chief Executive Foundation Programme, delivered by Solace, to support them in their role.
Employee engagement surveys
The LGA have supported the development of a Local Government ‘employee engagement index’ (LGEEI), a set of core questions for all councils to include in their employee surveys to create a benchmark for the sector.
Equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
The business case for good Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practice in the workplace is compelling. Employing and engaging with people who have a range of different backgrounds, experiences and ideas increases creativity and leads to better problem-solving and decision-making.
Ignite
Ignite enables Chief Executives to further develop their understanding of their roles in an increasingly complex environment. They can identify and explore themes relevant to their role with senior leaders and critical friends outside of local government and build stronger relationships with peers to support deeper collaboration across local government.
Inspire leadership development programme for Monitoring Officers
The Inspire Programme provides leadership development opportunities for existing and aspiring monitoring officers. It will build their skills and capabilities as strategic leaders, supporting their role in the governance and assurance of their organisation.
CIPFA Lead Programme for Section 151 Officers
The CIPFA LEAD Programme is aimed at new and existing Section 151 officers will develop their leadership skills and capabilities as strategic leaders, supporting their role in the governance and assurance of their organisation. Springboard
This is a unique development programme designed for future managerial leaders of local government. This is suitable for enthusiastic individuals at middle manager or head of service level, who are the rising stars of the public sector and seeking to move into more senior roles.
LG Challenge
The LG Challenge serves to develop a new generation of local government leaders. Over a six-month period, ten contestants tackle five real-life challenges in councils across the country with opportunity to be awarded the prestigious £10,000 Bruce-Lockhart scholarship. Local government officers of all levels, grades and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Recruitment 6 P’s
The LGA understands the challenges councils face with recruitment and retention of employees. The Recruitment 6 P’s resource includes information to support councils create a structured and effective recruitment process using the six P’s: Plan, Promote, Process, Partnerships, People and Pledge.
