LGA sustainability briefing: community energy

Energy supply is the second largest contributor to UK domestic greenhouse gas emissions. In 2022, energy supply accounted for 20 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions. Community energy refers to energy projects that are owned, controlled, or directly benefit local communities.

LGA sustainability briefing: decarbonising transport

Transport is the largest contributor to UK domestic greenhouse gas emissions. In 2022, transport accounted for 26 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions. The majority of transport emissions are from road transport, with cars accounting for 52 per cent of transport emissions.

According to the most recent State of Nature report, published in 2023, there has been a 19% decline in the average abundance of wildlife species in the UK since the 1970s. Preservation and restoration of the natural environment is an urgent priority that needs to be addressed by councils and individuals alike.

The UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated the UK’s Low Carbon Renewable Energy Economy to be £41.2 billion in 2020, employing over 207,000 full time equivalents in low carbon electricity and heat, energy efficient products, low carbon financial and advisory services and low emissions vehicles and infrastructure.

PQs: Skills for the economy and quality of life

Councils and combined authorities have an important and wide-reaching role in the skills system and their local economy. They are committed to working in partnership with their local employer base and further education sector to create a Post-16 education offer that works for businesses and gives every young person the chance to gain world class skills.

Kinship Care Strategy

The LGA welcomes investment in training and support for all kinship carers, and hope that the lessons learnt from piloting Family Network Support Packages will be swiftly shared. It will be important for the national kinship strategy to also recognise the role of partners in supporting kinship arrangements.

Local Government (Pay Accountability) Bill, Committee Stage, House of Commons, 22 May 2024

The Local Government (Pay Accountability) Bill purports to “ensure transparency and accountability on council salaries” by requiring Full Council to meet and approve by resolution the salary for any roles advertised or appointed at or over £100,000 a year (a figure that is not indexed in any way). This is unnecessary and unhelpful and we urge the Government to withdraw support for this Bill.
