This paper details the new Bills of relevance to local government and outlines our local government priorities, including issues which are not in the Queen’s Speech.

This stocktake is a positive opportunity to review current services and make sure that the system is working as well as possible, and in particular we appreciate the constructive dialogue that the DfE has already instigated with the sector.

As well as submitting this response the LGA hopes we can continue to work with Government to suggest improvements to the strategy and ensure we meet the Government’s responsibilities in delivering clean air across the country.

Councils are supportive of Build to Rent and recognise the important role that it can play in delivering much needed high quality market rented housing.

The Housing White Paper presents an important shift in the government’s housing strategy on a number of fronts.

The LGA has responded to the Government’s further consultation on proposals for the reformed business rates retention system.

This response has been informed by extensive discussions with representatives of councils and from the evidence and learning from the two major piloting areas, Sheffield and Gloucestershire.

All parts of local government – counties, districts, London Boroughs, metropolitan areas and unitary authorities – have a key role helping to generate economic growth, build homes with relevant services and infrastructure, strengthen communities, and protect vulnerable people in all parts of the country.

This briefing identifies Government policy initiatives and projects relevant to local government, providing an assessment of their status given the General Election. It also provides an update on the status of key legislation.

The Government’s industrial strategy provides a critical opportunity to drive the creation of a successful, world-leading economy and the LGA welcomes the Government’s ambition to drive growth and tackle the economic imbalances in different parts of the country.
