LGA starts discussions on assurance framework for local government
The Local Government Association has begun to work with the sector, professional associations, and other groups to map the different elements which currently provide assurance of the performance of local government, in the interests of clarity and transparency and to help understanding of how they all fit together.
This follows a recommendation from the LGA’s recent corporate peer challenge.

We aim to map the various elements that provide assurance of the performance of local government and to demonstrate how they all fit together. We hope that this framework will be useful both for councils and the public.
London Bi-Borough: digital disruption and transformation in SEND services
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster City Council, known as London’s Bi-Borough, adopted a collaborative approach to drive transformation in 2018 with the ambition of being the number one SEND service in the country; a target which has been accomplished.
LGA response to DfE consultation: Stable Homes, Built on Love
It is helpful to acknowledge the multi-agency nature of child protection work. By including this as one of the pillars, we hope to see more done to hold partners to account, for example ensuring that children and families can access appropriate mental health services where this is key to keeping them safe and well. There is no reference within these pillars to the importance of properly resourcing the system.
We have partnered with Disability Rights UK to offer a bespoke leadership programme for disabled councillors. We are committed to supporting under-represented groups in local government and we understand the value of providing councillors with learning opportunities alongside peers with shared experience.
Using behavioural insights to reduce demand for prostitution in Redbridge
The adverse effects of prostitution in Ilford within London Borough of Redbridge are felt by the community and perceived to be a threat to the long-term future of the area. The council sought to better understand men who buy sex and develop an intervention to alter their behaviour.

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have created a social value policy and toolkit to help their potential suppliers to understand how they will consider social value within their procurement decision making, with a useful outline of what types of social value are needed within the Borough. LBBD have agreed to let us share these useful documents with other councils
Roundtable - How do councils attract a new talent pool in economic development as well as retain staff in the sector?
This roundtable was chaired by Chris Shears, Head of Economy & Place, South Hams District Council & West Devon Borough Council. It gave councils an opportunity to share insights into how they are attracting a new talent pool, both in economic development and more generally. It also allowed for a discussion on how staff is retained within the sector.
