Aims
The aim of NNLAG is to provide a supportive national network for local authorities that are or likely to be affected by new nuclear development to make representation direct to Government and elsewhere on all matters related to nuclear new build and advanced nuclear technologies, including the production of nuclear-related hydrogen and other low carbon synthetic fuels, and nuclear-related transmission projects.
Priorities
Promoting local government
NNLAG provides a direct link for members to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to provide key input for emerging and future new nuclear policy. NNLAG also provides a credible voice covering the concerns and expectations of its members, all of which either are hosting new nuclear (e.g. Sizewell C and Hinkley Point C) or are likely to be affected by future nuclear development.
Supporting local government
NNLAG is a supportive network for its members to share knowledge, experience and best practice in relation to new nuclear development.
Key activities/outcomes of work undertaken
- NNLAG reviewed and reshaped its priorities to adjust to the changing nuclear landscape – to embrace the new technologies, while continuing to benefit from the learning from HPC and SZC, and to focus more on e.g. skills and workforce development opportunities across all our areas where each of our areas have their unique contribution and expertise to add.
- NNLAG commissioned Oxford Brookes University’s Impacts Assessment Unit to undertake a follow-up review the previously commissioned Study on the strategic effects of the construction of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, now that Hinkley Point C is moving toward peak construction.
- We coordinated an NNLAG response to the new National Policy Statement for siting nuclear power generation beyond 2025.
- NNLAG members met in person to discuss evolving nuclear policy and share updates and good practice.
- We held meetings with Great British Nuclear and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to discuss collaboration and joint approaches. DESNZ colleagues attended the annual in-person meeting.
- NNLAG members provided updates on the progress of their respective sites, and shared learning for the benefit of the other local authorities.
- NNLAG discussed with NuLeaf (Nuclear Advisory Legacy Forum) opportunities for greater collaboration, and joined a seminar organised by NuLeaf on SMRs and AMRs.
