Gateshead Council commissions a dedicated substance misuse service for young people.

Gateshead Council has seen unemployment rates rise, but the council is working with its partners to provide targeted support to the most deprived communities in a variety of ways.

Staff from Gateshead’s substance misuse service have a presence at the borough’s main hospital four days a week. This gives them a chance to identify and engage patients who have alcohol-related problems.

This case study is an example of the practical use of asset-based approaches in communities.

Gateshead Council partnered with a range of voluntary sector organisations to encourage asylum seekers and refugees to come forward for a COVID-19 vaccine. 

Gateshead set up a COVID-19 business compliance team to ensure restrictions and safety guidelines were adhered to and helped local businesses cope with change.

Hull and Wakefield have used PHE’s online SHAPE tool to work out how best to invest money in dental services. SHAPE has allowed officials to map where practices are against areas of high deprivation as a proxy for poor oral health.

Although Gedling Borough Council had run resident satisfaction surveys for a number of years, the council decided to strengthen its face-to-face engagement with residents to help teams develop more customer-centred service plans and get a deeper insight into the needs of local people.
