Leicestershire County Council is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The Council set up the Midlands Energy Performance Contract and appointed Veolia as delivery partner to deliver energy and carbon savings projects: roof solar PV installations, solar carports, LED lighting, controls upgrades, battery storage, EV charging

Leicestershire County Council has invested in training teachers and school leaders in how to provide high quality relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE). This case study is an example of the many pro-active and positive approaches which local authorities are taking to support inclusive RSE.

A sexual health clinic has been set up Leicester’s main shopping centre. It was chosen because it was convenient, but also through a desire to destigmatise sexual health.

A new centre has been established in Leicester to help those on the streets struggling with substance misuse. Around 150 people are using the facilities each month with many being encouraged into treatment as part of a multi-agency approach.

Partners in Leicester have taken a five-stage approach to improving discharge and avoiding unnecessary admissions. This example of how local areas are working to implement overall system change forms part of our managing transfers of care resource.

An integrated substance misuse service has been set up to work in the community and local prison.

In the context of Leicestershire’s county wide Integration Programme, housing, health and social care, partners recognised a major opportunity to radically redesign housing support, moving away from a historically fragmented set of services and constructing a new integrated housing offer focused on health and wellbeing outcomes, such as maximising independence in the home and preventing falls. This example of a local initiative forms part of our managing transfers of care resource.

Leicester sees T Levels as an entry to employment for young people. The council has used learning from apprenticeships and the Kickstart Scheme to put in place robust systems and support for team managers and students undertaking industry placements.

Santander Cycles Leicester is a new public ebike share system for the city, owned by Leicester City Council, delivered by Ride On and supported by the Department for Transport and Santander UK. Leicester specific businesses also support the scheme as a socially inclusive, affordable, easy to use and zero emission option for active travel.

In order to raise awareness through the community of Leicester, the city council intend to use the Carbon Literacy Project as a way of accrediting university students and school staff to become carbon literate trainers who will deliver training to school students within the city.
