This case study shows the excellent work that public health in local government is doing to commission for quality and best value across all areas.

As part of the Government’s drive for a green industrial revolution and the Council’s COVID-19 Economic Strategy and climate change commitments, Derbyshire County Council has launched a Green Entrepreneurs Fund – a £2 million grant fund to help local businesses develop and invest in green energy and carbon reduction, and provide a boost to the local economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic

In 2020, support was agreed from Derbyshire County Council's public health budget to promote access to affordable lending through the provision of a dedicated Service Development Officer and funding targeted at promoting affordable lending.

The fragmentation of the vaccination system has been highlighted as one of the key contributors to the low uptake of immunisations. But in Derbyshire a strong working relationship has been established between the council’s health protection team and the regional NHS England immunisation service.

Commissioned by the council, the Derbyshire Autism Information and Advice Service is delivered by Citizens Advice Mid Mercia to offer free information and advice for Derbyshire’s community of people with autism and their families or carers.

Derbyshire’s school nursing service has invested in extra training for its team to help them better support LGBT+ pupils. The project has equipped school nurses with the skills and confidence to address the issues these pupils face, helping improve their mental health in the process. This case study showcases the important role of school nurses in the education system.

Living Roofs contribute towards climate resistance, through absorbing rainwater falling on the roof, helping to reduce the ‘Urban Heat Island Effect’, capturing particulates from the air, and helping make the city a greener and happier place. The roofs are made from a mix of 13 native wildflower and 5 sedum species; selected by experts to aid and support bees and other pollinators.

In Derby and Derbyshire, local government, the NHS and voluntary sector organisations have set up a partnership to encourage innovation and new ways of working in sexual health. The approach is helping to tackle some of the problems caused by the fragmentation of the system. 

A dedicated team has been set up in Derby to support children from asylum-seeking families. It is part of the 0-19 Derby Integrated Family Health Service and involves two public health nurses dually qualified as health visitors and school nurses, a family health practitioner and child practitioner. This case study showcases the important role of school nurses in the education system and includes case studies from across the country focussed on how they provide an invaluable role to children.
