The public health team at Buckinghamshire County Council has worked with multiple partners to help tackle child sexual exploitation (CSE). It has involved training for staff and a project with community pharmacists to help them spot those at risk when they come in for emergency hormonal contraception (EHC). This case study forms part of our sexual health resource.

How Buckinghamshire County Council’s communications and public health teams worked together to promote the health and wellbeing activities available in the local area and support residents to lead healthier, more active lives.

As a result of the pandemic and the financial difficulties being experienced by many, the government provided local authorities with grants to distribute to those most in need. Buckinghamshire Council set up a Helping Hand service to help administer the funds, working with partners in the voluntary and community sector to reach those really struggling.

Broxtowe Borough Council has launched a new mixed-use leisure development in Beeston, Nottingham. The development features an Arc Cinema Complex with plans in place for three new food and drink retail outlets and is aimed at bolstering the visitor economy and night-time economy to encourage people to live and work in Beeston. It is hailed as a model for the post COVID-19 revival of the UK’s town centres for playing its part in “community wealth building”.

Broxtowe Borough Council are supporting small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the borough by developing new commercial units to boost inward investment and create new jobs. The council was successful in bidding for funding from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to develop these units in response to audits that were carried out by the council to understand the needs of SMEs in the borough.

Broxbourne Borough Council runs its own sports provision through the Broxbourne Sport service. Over the last 10 years the service has gone from an operating loss to a trading budget surplus, which is used to improve the facilities and increase participation. This has already saved more than £700,000 from the council’s capital programme budget.

This guide has been created to provide other local authorities with information on how to set up a network of programme ambassadors.

This case study is an example of a city wide forum which brings together public sector organisations to tackle race inequality in the city.

Through the development of a Work Local model, the council wants to improve employment, skills and workforce development opportunities. By engaging with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to understand their future workforce needs, and working with local partner agencies, the city council is building a support offer for local residents to develop job opportunities and career pathways.

Vending machines offering free sexual health tests are offering alternative way to access HIV and STI testing kits in an effort to reach groups who may traditionally face stigma accessing these services.
