Background The Marmot Review ‘Fair society, healthy lives' states that: "targeting [20 mph] zones in deprived residential areas would help lead to reductions in health inequalities".

The project context The Active Family Challenge was set up to encourage children away from the TV and computer and increase their physical activity levels. It was also designed to provide research for Bristol City Council into gaps in services. It aimed to find out whether focusing on the whole family would increase activity.

Project context Carnegie Weight Management (CWM) concentrates on a new service commissioned by NHS Peterborough as part of its response to increases in childhood obesity. The city currently has one of the highest childhood obesity rates for Year 6 children.

Project context About 1,500 people, predominantly men from Asian backgrounds, work as taxi drivers in Walsall. Research carried out for the project found that drivers faced a range of health and social problems. Drivers are often self-employed with extended family commitments. They tend to work long hours with busy periods over Christmas and Easter.

The ‘open data’ agenda places a duty on councils to make as much data available to the public as possible, including information on spending, accountability and performance. The London Borough of Redbridge was one of the first councils to adopt this policy.

Sheffield City Council collaborated with the Better with Data Society to deliver a programme of co-design activities to engage local people with data and use it to better understand and tackle the issue of air quality in the city.
