Build Back Local

The pandemic showed what central and local government can achieve during a crisis, when working together towards a shared goal. Now, as we face a number of new challenges in the fall out from the war in Ukraine, cost of living pressures, and the climate emergency, our Build Back Local campaign makes the case for local government to be trusted to tackle these challenges, help communities level up and to ensure they are financially and socially resilient in the longer term.

Learn more about Build Back Local’s five main strands:

Cost of living

Councils want to work with government to prevent poverty and disadvantage, improving life chances and building resilience.

Council cost pressures

Rising energy costs, spiralling inflation, and wage bill pressures are set to blow a hole in council budgets this year. We need to ensure councils have the resources they need to meet these unpredicted costs.

Work Local

Our vision for a devolved and integrated employment and skills system, giving local leaders the powers and funding to join up provision.

A local path to net zero

Councils want to work with government to tackle climate change, translating national climate ambitions into transformative action on the ground.

Future foundations

Councils share the collective national ambition to tackle their local housing crisis and create great places for current and future generations.

Re-thinking local

Re-thinking local, launched at the our 2020 Annual Conference, highlighted how councils have shown to be true leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Government restrictions and national lockdowns enabled the country to see their local area in a whole new light. The campaign observed how, with the right resources, local government can continue to rebuild communities and recover from the pandemic.

#CouncilsCan

With the right funding and powers, councils can continue to lead their local areas, improve residents’ lives, reduce demand for public services and save money for the taxpayer.

Bright Futures

Helping children and young people to fulfil their potential is a key ambition of all councils, but services that can support them to do so are under increasing pressure.

Work Local

Our proposal brings together advice and guidance, employment, skills, apprenticeship and business support around place, providing a more coherent offer for the unemployed and low skilled of all ages, while supporting local economic growth by forging better links between training providers and employers.

#OurDay

#OurDay was a yearly social media campaign to reveal a day in the life of local government and how councils deliver 800+ services on a day-to-day basis.
