Smoking prevalence analysis: methodology summary by the LGA Research and Information Team

The purpose of this analysis is to produce a set of forecasts at local authority level for prevalence of obesity and overweight among children, at both reception and Year 6. It is hoped that these forecasts will allow local authorities to anticipate likely future levels of child obesity in their area, assuming that trends in child obesity continue in their current trajectories.

Councils are continuing to balance their budgets and fulfil their statutory obligations as well as delivering a range of services to promote growth and community cohesion. Each year they close the funding gap in the face of funding cuts and expenditure pressures.

Councils must develop a different and closer relationship with their communities as the delivery of public services moves towards collaboration, empowerment and prevention.

We know local leaders want to help their communities stay healthy and receive the best possible care. Our support offer is designed to help them transform social care, health and integration, and lead health improvement and prevention locally.

Research into the nature of central government funding for local government, 2015/16-2017/18.

The purpose of this research is to understand the lessons learnt by those councils that have undertaken large-scale structural change of children’s services, and to identify the key building blocks that ensure high quality services for children, young people and families in this context.

From May 2022 to September 2022 the LGA conducted a survey across all 322 councils in England and Wales, to capture the views of councils outside of London see whether they would benefit from having the same powers as London in handing out fixed penalty notices (FPNs) to offenders.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has long called for genuine devolution to local areas. We believe that greater fiscal freedom, the power to raise more money locally and have greater control over how this money is spent in local areas is a crucial part of this process.

Results of a survey of readers’ views on first magazine and firstonline, the LGA’s membership magazine, published in print monthly. The survey sought feedback from readers on the magazine’s current content and possible future developments.
