A self care strategy was published two years ago in Manchester. Since then the city council and its partners have started implementing changes that should see a revolution in self care. This forms part of our resource on self care.

Manchester has some of the most challenging health problems in the country. Life expectancy is amongst the lowest in England, and compared with national averages people are more likely to die from cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease and accidents. There is a wide health gap between the city and the country as a whole.

The Manchester Healthy Weight Strategy identifies Black and Asian residents as being a cohort particularly at risk of obesity. So, after noticing low uptake of weight management support among South Asian women, Manchester City Council has helped to fund a programme specifically targeting them.

Manchester developed a tracking system to identify the number of people who have declined vaccines to enable GP practices to recall eligible individuals.

In north Manchester clinical commissioning group funding has supplemented investment by the council to create a network of breastfeeding support for new mothers.

Summary Mansfield District Council has started building 43 new family-sized dwellings at the Bellamy Road estate. The development is part of the Local Authority New Build programme which is funding councils to build much-needed social housing.

The council has ambitious plans to see housing construction on a large scale.
