As the second biggest city in the country, Birmingham City Council's Corporate Director for Adult Social Care Professor Graeme Betts thought it would be the perfect testing ground for the new Care Quality Commission (CQC) assurance process.

Funded through Oxfordshire County Council via direct payments, this bespoke, family-run provision is for a young man who was neglected, restrained, over medicated, and abused as an inpatient in various assessment and treatment units (ATUs). This case study forms part of the What Good Looks Like report on people with a learning disability and autistic people.

In Herefordshire we knew that we had rising numbers of EY children with SEND. Our ambition was to have an Early Years SEND service that encompasses a holistic approach to the early identification, support of, provision for and placement of Early Years children with SEND.

This case study forms part of Shaping Places for Healthier Lives, a grant programme funding five council-led partnerships across England to build places that support good health for all. Babergh and Mid Suffolk used the National Tree Map to establish tree canopy cover across both predominantly rural districts, allowing them to understand tree cover to ward level and spatially, along with the value of benefits trees provide us with.

Torbay Council needed to construct new sea defences at two beaches. The original design was met with substantial public opposition, demonstrating significant community ‘buy-in’ to the appearance of the seafront. The council decided to pause the project and commission new designs, created using co-design and consultation principles.
