In June 2020 the Local Government Association (LGA) conducted a consultation to gather views on its draft Model Member Code of Conduct as part of its work on supporting the sector to continue to aspire to high standards of leadership and performance. Responses to the consultation were gathered through an online questionnaire as well as by email via a dedicated inbox. This report combines all of the responses received and presents an overview of the themes that emerged.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to sweep across our world, our councillors across England and Wales have done incredible work assisting those in need, advising and leading in our councils and in our communities. This annual report, published in November 2020, focuses on our achievements of 2019/20, including the start of the lockdown from 24 March.

The LGA works with a network of parliamentary supporters, including our Vice-Presidents (those with a strong interest in the work of local government who champion its causes in Parliament), to promote positive change and public service reform.

In our last membership survey, 89 per cent of council leaders, frontline councillors and officials surveyed told us the LGA’s lobbying on behalf of local government was important.

The LGA in Parliament summarises our work on behalf of councils ensuring that local government has a strong, credible voice in Parliament. It sets out how we lobbied to secure positive change to the  legislation and policy being debated by parliamentarians in both the House of Commons and House of Lords.
