On 19 May over 30 councils attended a morning roundtable to discuss their priorities for the new rough sleeping strategy, due to be released later in the year. The roundtable was broken up into three workshops to look at what central government, local government and the third sector can do to help end rough sleeping.

This report, commissioned by the LGA from the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (authors: Ian Copeman and Lois Beech), makes a number of recommendations to government on how we can best meet the needs of people in later life with case studies demonstrating how councils are addressing the housing needs of an ageing population.

Expert help to support local housing, planning and homelessness priorities.

Guidance setting out best practice and procedure on out of area placements in another local authority area within England. This applies to accommodation used to meet the duties set out in homelessness legislation, as well as when a local authority is supporting a child under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989, where this support includes provision of accommodation.

The LGA and Local Partnerships worked with Leeds and Cornwall Councils during 2022 to build a case for investment in homelessness prevention. The LGA’s Research and Information Team circulated an online survey to Directors of Housing at English local authorities which own housing stock. The purpose of the survey was to assess the potential impact of the introduction of new standards being introduced for the professionalisation of the housing sector.
