This business plan sets out how the Local Government Association (LGA) will continue to support and be an advocate for councils in the next three years.

Now in its 11th year, the LG Challenge aims to develop local government’s future leaders. The intensive annual competition, designed by and for local government, celebrates and recognises the amazing talent in the sector. It offers the winner the chance to take away the prestigious Bruce-Lockhart scholarship worth up to £10,000.

Looking after and protecting children and young people isn’t just up to the lead member or director of children’s services – we need everyone looking out for our most vulnerable children and young people, and every councillor has a role to play in embedding the corporate parenting principles and doing all they can to support children in care to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. 

Our new plan builds on Bright Futures’ successes and focusses our efforts for the coming year.

For the LGA, good mental health and wellbeing for children, young people and adults is an absolute priority. Councils have responsibilities for children’s mental health through their children’s and public health services, as well as their role on health and wellbeing boards and as local system leaders.

The strongest determinants of health and health inequalities are the social, economic, commercial and environmental conditions in which people live: the ‘wider determinants of health’. We are pleased to announce that the LGA is working in partnership with The Health Foundation on this new programme tackling the wider determinants of health.

The LGA and the Social Care Institute for Excellence have joined up to produce an accessible and practical resource that supports local systems in fulfilling their ambition of integration.

Obesity is considered to be one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. It is having an impact on people’s lives now, across the generations, in terms of our quality of life, our risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and its association with common mental health disorders. Doing nothing is not an option.
